I dunno… Maybe because I went to a university where people enrolled from literally all over the world, but I have become used to goodbyes not being real goodbyes. I shared space with most of my best friends for a very short time – my very best friend in the world whom I consider like a sister, I think we’ve only lived in the same city for less than 6 months – but thanks to the internet, we’ve been able to keep in touch and keep those friendships alive, even if it is sporadic. I treasure every hello because it is an opportunity to find new people to add to my virtual tribe. And even if we end up saying goodbye physically, they are still there somewhere, ready to talk when the opportunity arises, or get together if we find ourselves in the same neck of the woods.
Even those whom I have broken off from, those who have passed on or who will no longer talk to me or whom I have cut ties with because they ended up being toxic for me, or whom I’ve just lost touch with over the years… I never regret those hellos. I became who I am because I knew them. They added to my life (and I hope that I added to theirs) in some way, major or minor, and my life would not be as rich if I didn’t have them there for whatever time they were there. If I never said hello to anyone, maybe I would be able to avoid the pain of goodbye, but I would also never have really lived. Hope that makes sense.
For all the people that come drifting in and out of our lives, moving on and around the world as the winds take them… Often leaving us with hole for where they once were.
Remember you’re never farther than a router hop away from them… Which is so close and yet can be so ironically far at times.
