Right. self-care is about being self-focused not selfish. Self-focused is about providing needs for yourself while selfish is about pandering to your false desires out of people pleasing or low self-esteem (another ‘self’ word).

I believe the above is supposed to be the good and original meaning of the saying ‘You have to love yourself before you can love others’, which is horribly perverted as described in the other comic (which I’d like to believe addresses the horrible perversion of the saying rather than the good and original meaning of the saying) https://www.depressioncomix.com/posts/387/

“We cultivate love when we allow our most vulnerable and powerful selves to be deeply seen and known, and when we honor the spiritual connection that grows from that offering with trust, respect, kindness and affection.

Love is not something we give or get; it is something that we nurture and grow, a connection that can only be cultivated between two people when it exists within each one of them – we can only love others as much as we love ourselves.

Shame, blame, disrespect, betrayal, and the withholding of affection damage the roots from which love grows. Love can only survive these injuries if they are acknowledged, healed and rare.”

Testing. Just ignore this comment or delete it. I think my last comment didn’t submit or maybe it did and it’s subject to approval. I’m making this comment in order to see.

See context of ‘we can only love others as much as we love ourselves’ by Brene Brown:

There’s nothing wrong with looking after yourself, provided you’re not harming anyone else by doing so. Everyone should be free to indulge themselves occasionally without having to feel guilty about it.

Also, a warm soak in a tub often helps alleviate the symptoms of depression.

I look at self-care this way: in an aircraft emergency you are supposed to put on your own oxygen mask first, then help those around you. The idea isn’t every person for themself–only that if you allow yourself to become incapacitated you’ll be no help to those who are depending on you.
