The worst part, the worst part, was that Lord de Worde was never wrong. It was not a position he understood in relation to his personal geography. People who took an opposing view were insane, or dangerous, or possibly even not really people.
I’ll tell you what I’m tired of, is “liberals” thinking they’re not supposed to have any sort of ethical standards, such that when you point out that something is genuinely harmful or wrong or “off,” suddenly you’re a bad guy, even if it’s harmful or wrong or “off” for them too.
There ARE ways for a person to behave that would rightly get that person tagged as insane.
Mass shootings are not sane.
Rapes are not sane.
Destroying the environment or wiping out an entire species is not sane.
Beating up your kids is not sane.
People have to be *fundamentally wrong and broken* to want to do things like this. It isn’t an “opinion,” either, because these actions result in measurable, material, actual harm.
Climb down out of your head once in a while and look at what happens in the real world.
Also? The word “outdated” is not a sufficient substitute for “wrong.” FYI.
And yet, there is evidence (supported by scientific research) that many people doing the exact things you assert must require a fundamentally “broken” mind are, in fact, not suffering from any kind of mental illness. People can be cruel without being mentally ill. People can act on deeply flawed, fundamentalistic views without being mentally ill. People can be driven by greed, political agendas, religious beliefs, wartime or cultural upbringing to do terrible things and be, medically speaking, perfectly sane. You don’t get to change the definition of a word – and in doing so shift the blame to sufferers of mental illnesses – just because you, personally, cannot conceive of a sane person doing things you are fundamentally opposed to.
this is depression comix what does anything you wrote have to do with this website’s MAIN TOPIC?! we don’t do political bullshit here we only read and discuss depression and how much society doesn’t care about it or its victims and how the world sees us and how we see it. we got no political stuff to talk about here it’s not a place for such things
not to mention hose things are often if not usually done by your non liberal peers, Dana, so stop blaming liberals for everything and educate yourself xD
Such actions are unreasonable, irrational, cruel, immoral, even atrocious, but insane? No. They are almost always the result of deliberate conscious decisions made by people who were capable of making a different choice. People who do such things are deeply flawed, not mentally ill.
Dana Seilhan, I propose they are sane in fact. But they are Evil. Calling such people “insane” implies that it is an illness -which Evil is not. But suppose for sake of argument that you were right. If all of these Evil things you listed are caused by mental illness…then WHAT Evil things on Earth are NOT caused by mental illness? Might they all be diseases of the brain then? If these two things are synonymous that makes all “Evil” people actually ILL people, who are not at all responsible for their crimes. That implies that they should be cared for and eventually cured of there illness. But in that world that would mean…that no one is willfully Evil. What then happens to the notion of Human choice and Free Will? The very idea of “punishment” for crime? Morality would cease to exist, and the world would be a place of biological machines called “Humans”. Climb down out of your own skull once in a while and look at what happens in the real world Dana.
Hey, Zuul, people choose to rape, kill, and be evil. That’s how it works; they fell to temptation… “The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing people that he doesn’t exist.” And evil lurks in everyone’s heart, regardless of which religion (or none) that you pursue.
This has as little to do with being a “liberal” as with being “retarded.” Where does this say that it is wrong to say that an action is harmful or wrong? It doesn’t, of course. “Harmful” and “wrong” are appropriate words.
YES! The term “mental illness” is not a catch-all for other things that are otherwise difficult or impossible to describe, explain, discuss with current terminology. I am confident that we will refine the language as we go and develop the mental constructs to differentiate between mental health issues and mental/physical/behavioral aberrations that lead to such events as mass shootings
of course not 5 seconds later as if you did not say a single word … sorry Phoenix but this society is created from individual narcissism only everyone is a judge and we are in a never ending jury where everyone is declared guilty without a reason. thanks for the colored page it’s beautiful!

what are you talking about?

It’s a relevant quote from one of Terry Pratchett’s novels, which was titled The Truth.
RIP Terry, you had such a way of verbalizing stuff I never could put into words.
(…unless you were making a meta joke, in which case d’oh, went over my head 😛 )

But how can we reliably separate the actual mentally ill people who happen to commit atrocities from the sane but evil ones?
