Yeah, if only depression responded to platitudes…

Added to this is finding a doctor that believes you, only had one doctor that accepted mental health as a real issue most have just brushed it off.

They brush it off until we mention suicidal ideation, at which point they freak and lock us up like there’s something wrong with us. Ironic.

But what if, like the One Ring, your depression cannot be destroyed by any strength or craft that you possess? Very few overcome depression without some kind of help. Frodo wouldn’t have got far without Sam.

The thing with this particular strip is that it focuses on minorities, especially people of color who find it especially hard to seek help with their depression. There is a lot of pressure to remain strong and not show weakness, and the strong belief that the health care system does not take their pain seriously anyways.

I don’t think this is just about minority or about how doctors should take the condition seriously. At least within this strip… The pressure shown here is one that has to do with a point of view someone that is depressed could feel.

For example if everyone around you was struggling or coming off of something that hurt them… A dangerous mindset could set in that because of the allotted time and effort it takes to maintain daily life doesn’t allow one to confront the emotions they are dealing with. It remains and festers and in my own experience… The worst case scenario was being in denial or just having to be fine for my own sake as well as others.

Ideas like I can’t afford to feel this way because of such and such would slow down or be hurt.

Thank you for your comment. This was really about the knowledge that there isn’t a support system that can adequately treat you. This happens a lot to minorities, they are more expected than other groups to just toughen up. One time when I went to a doctor for help, he said that I should go home back to my own kind. He didn’t say that in an aggressive way, but it made it clear to me that as a minority I was expected to just deal with my own problems, and it took ten years to gather the courage to see a doctor again because of those comments. If you believe the system won’t help you, the character’s mindset is the kind of need to get by,

Stuff like that really sucks. People like Doctors that are supposed to help you more or less telling you to fuck off and go home. Had that experience myself some years ago. Really hard to deal with.

I just found your website today. I checked out several of your strips and found them to be very insightful, so much so that I did a brief post about your site and provided a link for my readers (www.depressivediva,com) to come and check it out.
