Music’s been a literal lifesaver when I’ve needed to do living things (take an exam, go for an interview…) but was too depressed/dissociated out of my mind. Turn it up, drown everything else out and it helps me to at least focus for the hour or two I need to do what is necessary.

Ardent Slacker says
For some reason, songs about addiction always make me cry. I still don’t know why “Whiskey Lullaby” makes tears come, and “Heroin, she said” just grips me. I mean… I don’t do drugs. (Other than caffeine and my antidepressant, I guess.) I don’t know that either of those is good for my depression. I just have ’em in the playlist and get emotional when they randomly come up.
clay jonathan says
Hi, could you tell me the artists for each song? There are several that come up.
Fred says
Haven’t read all previous replies so I might just be repeating stuff, but anyway:This is a great idea! I follow your comics and await their weekly arrival because so often you catch just the right feeling that I connect with – I didn’t even realise that my own playlist does what you say – makes me feel someone is listening. Keep it up (please!)

“Hurt” by NIN. It’s not a happy song, but listening to it has helped me. The final line, “If I could start again a million miles away I would keep myself, I would find a way” has always resonated with me.

I put the quiet version on the list because it’s the more listenable one. It’s one of my favorite songs too.
Kevin Nguyen (@DraikenTalkos) says

This is going to sound weird as. But I actually snag an old song, theme song from The Greatest American Hero. “Believe it or Not”. It evokes images of my childhood and optimism. And for a brief moment I can’t help singing along with it and feeling a little better.

Frank Turner’s music always connects with me when my depression gets bad. I don’t know if he has it too, or if his songs are just written in a way that such meaning can be gleamed, but his discography is basically this for me. Though admittedly, his music tends to be more upbeat, without losing that sense of relatability (e.g. “I know you are a cynic/But I think I can convince you/’Cause broken people can get better/if they really want to/Or at least that’s what I have to tell/myself If I am hoping to survive” from his song, Recovery).
Of special mention are:
Recovery
Losing Days
If Ever I Stray from the Path I Follow
The Way I Tend To Be.

I’ve suffered and continue to suffer from anxiety attacks and mental breakdowns from my depression and PTSD. The lyrics really speak to me. By the way, I’ve lurked here a really long time but never left a comment before this. Thank you, for all that you do.

When I really need catharsis I’m a fan of ‘That Day’ by Natalie Imbruglia.
I find ‘This Year’ by the Mountain Goats good when I need a quick boost.

Ooo… music is so important for me as well. Copying from a playlist I’ve entitled “They Do It Every Time” (meaning songs that generally can make me cry from their relevance every listen)

Not sure if you are still adding songs to your playlist or not, but I just found the comics and felt like giving back a little piece of me since they have helped quite a bit over the last couple nights. Made a real quick scan of the playlist and didn’t see The Other Side by David Gray or Fix You by Coldplay, both are songs that have stayed with me through many a long lonely nights when I needed them most. A third, while a little on the religious side has always had a solid spot on my list, is Go Rest High On That Mountain by Vince Gill. Thanks for the work you do!
Nebil Said says
I hope it’s not too late to make a request for the playlist. I think Here Comes a Thought from Steven Universe would make for a fantastic addition. It’s performed by Estelle and AJ Michalka and I just checked that it’s on Spotify. Also, I’d like to thank you for these comics. Many of them give me goosebumps because of how relatable they are.

This’ll probably sound dumb, but “Smile” by Mikkey Ekko? I’ve never heard any of his music besides that one song…I came across in in a Jessica Jones fanvid (as corny as that is). Idk, something about the way the video and song meshed together (along with the fact that I’d seen the show and Jessica’s journey prior to the vid and had some context). It helps me out sometimes. I’ve never actually seen the music video, I usually end up watching the fanvid.

Friend Please- Twenty One Pilots

Thanks for making this playlist. I’ve really appreciated it recently.
I don’t know if you’re still adding songs. If you are,
Grey street. By Dave Matthews band.

I had a winamp plugin that let me adjust the speed and pitch of a song. I’d play depressing songs at double pitch and speed, and it was amazing. It sounded like the chipmunks were singing it. Even on my worst days it could distract me for at least a happy moment.
