but with blackjack! and hookers!
As many of you know, you can support what I do here on Patreon. You can also support many other creative people on Patreon as well. It’s probably the most popular way that creators can get continual financial support from their fans. Thanks to Patreon, I’ve been able to afford webhosting without ads, subscriptions to digital art programs, and lots and lots of coffee. I’m grateful for what it has done for me over the years.
However, it always hasn’t been easy. The fact of the matter is that although I can post through Patreon, it is not my site. That means I’m at the mercy of whatever the people in charge of Patreon decide. Not only am I bound to their rules but, whatever changes they make I have to swallow. If they change their charging policies, as they did a while back, it affects me deeply and I had to make a second Patreon because supporters were bailing on Patreon in droves. They wanted to have an iPad app that would charge their members, so they were going to pass on the 30% Apple tax to someone. And of course, everyone panics and the creator is left watching their support slowly leak over the years.
Things have even been political. When the Ukrainian-Russian war broke out and Patreon wouldn’t take sides, more people left. Understandable, but not good for creators. The fact of the matter is that even though it’s the creator’s content, it is still in the Patreon wrapping and that affects what supporters think of your brand.
What has frustrated me the most is how little control over I had of these things. I am completely dependent on Patreon financially and that is not a smart thing. Whatever changes Patreon makes I have to adapt to and whatever image Patreon has will affect the support I get. Aren’t there any other options?
Well… what if I was the Patreon?
When I started that would have been impossible. But now it’s 2025 and not only can I make one, I can deeply integrate it into my site so that people don’t have to leave it. Now that I think about it, isn’t it strange to think that for people to get bonus content they need to login to a completely different site??
So over the past little while I have been working on a members section here which mirrors what I do on Patreon but it’s all local. The preview strips, the Hi-Resolution images, the DIscord channel, I can do all that on my own. Right now I have most of it working, I just have to do more testing and make sure there’s already some content so first visitors don’t walk into an empty store.
While I have been building this, I realized it’s not just an alternative to Patreon. In some ways, it’s even better.
- I have total freedom — I am working for myself and not feeling like an employee of Patreon.
- I can include Sexy Losers content. That was off-limits on Patreon because of their policies and PayPal’s conservative stance. Now readers can support Sexy Losers directly and I have one less excuse not to prioritize it.
- I’m no longer limited by what Patreon lets me do. On my own site, I can experiment, add new features, and try things that Patreon wouldn’t allow. I have room to grow.
I am very excited about this and will bring you more information in the next month as things slide together. If you have any questions or suggestions, don’t hesitate to tell me. I really do want to bring something unique to you with as much value as I can.
To be clear, I’m not leaving Patreon. If you like it there, you can stay. This new system is just another option for those who want a little bit more or maybe aren’t keen on using Patreon.
