Welcome back and thank you for taking precious time out of your finite life to read this.
With the refresh of the site, I’ve finally found purpose for this site that I lacked when I got this domain back in 2013. Now eleven years is a long time to figure out what to do with something. I originally got the domain because I was looking for online space to host depression comix, and when I found my current provider it came with a free domain name, so I chose claycomix because I needed to choose something. I already owned the dot com for depressioncomix at the time so I thought I’d figure out a use for it in the future.
For a while, I just used the site to post updates. Not the actual comics, just notices of updates. Older comics like A Heart Made of Glass and Aphasia were in the back pages of the site, but it didn’t have any use on its own. When I started making new series beyond depression comix I made new subdomains while the main claycomix site just languished. I really wasn’t using it wisely.
Now with the refresh and merging of the sites, it now has a purpose. It is now a personal shrine to the joy I have of making comics. You can read a lot of my worksafe art and illustrations in one place. Some of it good (I think), some of it bad, but it’s here and online for those curious enough to go through it.
Now that I’m focused on one main site, it’s easier for me to improve things. One thing I am currently working on is rescanning A Heart Made of Glass. When I originally scanned it, it was 1998 and I didn’t really think that there would be a time when monitor resolution would get so good that each page would become tiny and unreadable. Everything I did before 2011 suffers from this same slow shrinkage. Unfortunately I don’t have better scans so rescanning is necessary. The last page of chapter 2 has no original to scan so I don’t know what exactly to do about that.
With depcom, I kept the original scans of everything so I have high resolution scans of every strip since the beginning. I am in the process of replacing the older 400pxel and 500 pixel versions with 800 pixel versions. A tedious process but worth it. 800 pixel just looks so much better.
Now I’m not saying my work is the greatest or anything but I really did enjoy drawing it, and now I’m enjoying looking back at it as I refresh the images for the site. One of the things that make me happy is that I no longer focus on the mistakes in the art, the awkward wording, or missed artistic opportunity. Instead, I just think of how fun that was to make and see it stand on its own and appreciate how it came to be. It’s not perfect, but it’s mine.
- If you haven’t, you can see the refresh of art for “A Strawberry Memory“, “Later That Night” and “A Heart Made of Glass: My Love Letter To You.” You can also see some ancient work I did for a student paper called “no-name comics“. All of these can be found in the menu bar under READ COMICS.
- Character icons for many of the major characters of depcom can be found on the main depression comix page.
Talk to you soon and thank you for reading and your continued support!
